Nebraska tends to be snow covered in the winter months but that shouldn't stop you from seeing their attractions while you are there. There are several museums throughout the state featuring a wide variety of events and history from Nebraska's past. The Strategic Air & Space Museum is home to a large permanent collection of aircraft, missiles and spacecraft. Aircraft include B-1, SR-71, B-36, B-52, MiG-21, Fb-111, Vulcan and Apollo 009.
There are also flight simulators and traveling exhibits. They often hold special weekend events as well. The museum is located in Ashland.
Another Ashland attraction is the Willow Point Gallery and Museum. This is an indoor museum that features 29 wildlife species including polar bears. The atmosphere includes indoor waterfalls, foliage and a creek. There is also an exhibition of Gene Roncka's paintings of Nebraska. In Elmwood you will find the Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Museum where you can learn about this great author and experience the house in which she wrote many classics.
Bess Streeter Aldrich was one of the most read authors from Nebraska. She published 160 short stores and articles, nine novels, one novella, two books of short stories and one omnibus. She was made famous by her book, Miss Bishop, which became the movie Cheers for Miss Bishop and her short story, "The Silent Stars Go By," became the Angela Lansbury and Lee Remick show, The Gift of Love. The home was built in 1922 and features original furnishings, antiques, a flower garden and lily pond and a video about the author.
In Fremont you can't miss the Nebraska Railroad Museum and Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad. Here you can take a 16-mile trip in a diesel-powered train and climate controlled coach. The train will take you through the Elkhorn River Valley and includes a short stop in Nickerson. The journeys are two hours and available year round. The Fremont Dinner Train is also a fun trip, which includes a dance car and lounge car. They also hold Mystery trains, USO shows, dinner theaters, wine tastings and other season shows. Reservations are required and they are open year round.
Despite the cold weather in Nebraska there are many interesting activities to take part in and stay warm. A dinner show in Fremont could turn into the best Valentine's Day experience your significant other has ever had. Whatever you choose to do it is sure to be interesting, educational and a whole lot of fun.
