If you have lived all of your life in the Southern United States, I believe you have come to know the region well now. warm weather and you would gladly live in it year round, so it's no surprise that many of our vacations are spent along the East coast or in the Deep South. Over the years, I've had many occasions to visit North Carolina - for me, it is convenient driving-wise and it is an area that offers opportunities for all visitors.
Outdoors enthusiasts, foodies, golfers, beach folks, and art lovers...there is an ideal vacation to plan here.
North Carolina: Where to Go
I realize no two travelers will enjoy the same things, and what's good about this part of the country is the landscape changes. In the space of a few hours you could drive from the beach to the mountains and go from surfing to scaling hills. Whatever makes for your dream vacation, you're certain to find a city to suit your tastes. Some of my personal recommendations include:
1) The Currituck Outer Banks. The OBX are an extremely popular destination for visitors. I prefer to go just before the height of the season, which begins in late spring. The Currituck County side of the Outer Banks is especially nice because the beaches are beautiful and not as crowded as other areas. If lying on the beach doesn't suit you, there is golf and fishing, nature hiking and a few wineries to enjoy.
2) Bryson City. If you love mountain biking, hiking, and river rafting, Bryson City in the heart of the Great Smokies is the place to stay. We have rented cabins here many times and enjoy the clean air and outdoor fun. The town itself is quite small, but if you're the adventurous type you won't mind at all because you'll be out enjoying the days.
3) Charlotte. If you prefer cities, Charlotte is one of the largest cities in the state and there is definitely no shortage of things to see and do in the area. Most of the major sporting events are held around here - NFL football, NASCAR racing, and professional basketball, and several museums around the city offer fascinating exhibits on art, history, and culture.
Great food, breathing mountain views, gorgeous beach sunsets. You'll find everything you want in the perfect vacation in North Carolina. If you have the time to spare, you can enjoy it all in one place.
